THE STORY CUBE GAME: A Fun Story Creation Activity to Do with Children

Creating stories is a wonderful way for children to express their creativity, explore their imagination, and develop their language skills. It’s also a powerful tool for bonding with parents and learning important values. One fun and engaging story creation activity that parents can do with their children is called Story Cubes of Values. This activity is inspired by techniques used by art therapists and teachers to encourage children to think creatively and explore different concepts.

Materials Needed

  • Six-sided dice or blank cubes (you can use pre-made story cubes or make your own from cardboard).

  • Stickers or markers to write or draw on the cubes.

  • A list of values or concepts (e.g., kindness, courage, friendship, honesty, perseverance, and respect).

  • Paper and pencils for writing the story.

Step-by-Step Guide

1.    Create the Story Cubes:

o   Begin by labeling each side of the cubes with a word or picture that represents a value or concept. For example, one side could have “Kindness,” another could have “Courage,” and so on. If you’re using blank cubes, you can draw pictures or symbols that represent these values.

o   Depending on the child’s age, you can make the words or pictures as simple or complex as you like. Younger children may prefer simple drawings, while older children might enjoy words or more abstract symbols.

2.    Roll the Dice:

o   Once the cubes are ready, have the child roll all of them at once. The values that land face-up will be the key elements of the story you’ll create together.

o   For example, if the cubes land on “Friendship,” “Courage,” and “Honesty,” these will be the core themes of the story.

3.    Create the Story:

o   Start the story by setting up a simple scenario. For instance, “Once upon a time, there was a little village where everyone valued friendship and honesty, but one day, something happened that required a lot of courage…”

o   Encourage the child to take the lead in deciding what happens next. Ask open-ended questions like, “What kind of characters live in this village?” or “What challenge might require courage?”

o   Guide the child to incorporate the values that were rolled into the plot. This not only helps structure the story but also reinforces the understanding of these important concepts.

4.    Write or Draw the Story:

o   As the story develops, you can write it down or draw pictures together. Younger children might prefer drawing scenes from the story, while older children can help with the writing.

o   If the child enjoys it, you can create a little book out of the story, complete with illustrations and a title. This makes the activity more tangible and gives the child a sense of accomplishment.

5.    Discuss the Story:

o   After the story is complete, take a few moments to discuss it with your child. Ask them questions like, “What did you learn about courage?” or “How did the characters show friendship?”

o   This discussion helps to reinforce the values explored in the story and gives the child a deeper understanding of them.

Why This Activity is Beneficial

  • Encourages Creative Thinking: The open-ended nature of the activity allows children to explore their imagination freely, making it a fun and creative exercise.

  • Reinforces Important Values: By focusing on specific values, children learn about concepts like kindness and honesty in a context that makes them meaningful and relatable.

  • Enhances Language Skills: Storytelling helps children develop their vocabulary, sentence structure, and narrative skills.

  • Strengthens Parent-Child Bonding: Working together on a creative project fosters communication and closeness between parents and children.

  • Builds Confidence: Creating and completing a story gives children a sense of accomplishment and boosts their confidence.

Conclusion

The Story Cubes of Values activity is a simple yet powerful way to engage children in storytelling while teaching them important life lessons. Whether used by parents at home, teachers in a classroom, or art therapists in a therapeutic setting, this activity offers a fun and educational experience that children will enjoy and benefit from. Plus, it’s a great way to spend quality time together, creating stories that can be treasured for years to come.
